Women’s History Month – March 2023


In Honor of Women’s History Month we highlight the President of the B/Q Girls CHSAA Denise Hillig

In Honor of Women’s History Month we highlight the President of the B/Q Girls CHSAA Denise Hillig. Denise attended St. Agnes in College Point where she played 3 Varsity sports - Volleyball, Basketball, and Softball. She continued at Iona University where she played 4 years of Softball.  Denise was named to the MAAC All Conference team her junior year.  Denise is currently teaching in her 35th year at St. John’s Prep. She is currently the Computer Science Department Chairperson and the Mathematics Department Chairperson.  Denise has been working with the CHSAA for 35 years. During her years, she has coached JV Volleyball, Varsity Softball, and JV Basketball. She was the Treasurer of the B/Q Girls CHSAA for about 10 years and is currently in her 19th year as President. She is also currently the President of the State CHSAA and has been on the Executive Board of the State Association for about 15 years. Denise serves on the Board of Directors for the Brooklyn/Queens CYO Program.  Denise was inducted in the GCHSAA Hall of Fame in 2003 and inducted in the CYO Hall of Fame in 2017.

Women’s History Month – March 2023


Nyasha Irizarry, Monsignor Scanlan and Leah Hernandez, Monsignor McClancy.

In Honor of Women’s History Month we highlight two of our CHSAA coaches. Nyasha Irizarry, Monsignor Scanlan and Leah Hernandez, Monsignor McClancy.

Leah has been coaching 9 years in the CHSAA. Prior to that she coached 1 year in the Skyline Conference at Mount Saint Vincent. She has won the CHSAA JV Coach of the Year in 2015, 2017 and 2020 and also won the CHSAA Class A Championship in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2019. Leah is a CHSAA Alum, playing at Christ the King Regional High School and then continued her career at SUNY Old Westbury and Hunter College. Leah is currently a Physical Education Teacher.


Nyasha is in her 4th year coaching as the JV Head Coach and Varsity assistant. She was named twice the CHSAA JV Coach of the Year in the 2022 and 2023 seasons. She won her first JV Championship this month. Nyasha also has now won back to back Varsity CHSAA Championships in the years 2022 and 2023. Nyasha is a CHSAA Alum as well. She played at Archbishop Molloy High School where she received all city accolades. Nyasha continued her career on scholarship at Manhattan College. She also played for the Puerto Rican National team. Nyasha is currently a Geometry and Financial Literacy teacher at Scanlan and also has her own clothing brand called FORTHELOVEOFTHEGAME.

In Honor of Women’s History Month we highlight Monsignor Scanlan‘s Varsity Head Coach, Mercedes Dukes.
Mercedes played 4 years of varsity basketball at Monsignor Scanlan and won a city, state and federation championship while being regarded as one of the best players in NYC. She was named to the All City Team throughout her career. After graduating from Scanlan, Mercedes went to St. John’s University on a full athletic scholarship. Following St. John’s she decided to go play professionally in Puerto Rico. Once Mercedes decided to stop playing she came back home to pursue her career as an entrepreneur with several successful business ventures.
Mercedes started her career as an assistant coach at Scanlan for nine years. In her 10th season, she was named the Head Coach but unfortunately due to Covid she was unable to coach a regular season. The following year, Mercedes won her first AA Championship as a Head Coach and was also named CHSAA Coach of the Year. In March 2023, Mercedes won yet another AA City championship.
